A theoretical study on threshold conditions of modulation instability in oppositely directed couplers

2016

We theoretically investigate threshold conditions to observe modulation instability (MI) in a two-core nonlinear oppositely directed coupler (ODC) with a negative-index material (NIM) channel. Using linear stability analysis, we obtain an expression for the instability gain. The analysis shows, with two discrete instability regions, that the band at lower values of f (ratio of the backward to forward-propagating waves amplitude) is a result of the nonlinear positive index material (PIM) channel while the broader range band is a consequence of the nonlinear NIM channel. Both bands are highly sensitive to system parameters. We demonstrate that MI has a threshold-like condition in the normal d…

Enhancing Optomechanical Coupling via the Josephson Effect

2013

Cavity optomechanics is showing promise for studying quantum mechanics in large systems. However, smallness of the radiation-pressure coupling is a serious hindrance. Here we show how the charge tuning of the Josephson inductance in a single-Cooper-pair transistor (SCPT) can be exploited to arrange a strong radiation pressure -type coupling $g_0$ between mechanical and microwave resonators. In a certain limit of parameters, such a coupling can also be seen as a qubit-mediated coupling of two resonators. We show that this scheme allows reaching extremely high $g_0$. Contrary to the recent proposals for exploiting the non-linearity of a large radiation pressure coupling, the main non-linearit…

Contributions to the analysis and design of all-inductive filters with dielectric resonators

2003

In this work, three modern full-wave methods will be employed for the accurate analysis and efficient design of a novel family of all-inductive filters loaded with dielectric resonators. These techniques are the bi-orthonormal-basis combined with the orthonormal-basis method, the hybrid mode-matching/spectral method, and, finally, the BI-RME (Boundary Integral-Resonant Mode Expansion) method. Then, two prototypes of band-pass filters have been designed in this work using a CAD tool developed in the research groups implicated in this manuscript. The procedure described in this paper only involves a limited number of actual physical parameters at each step so that it is computationally very e…

A new empirical method for extracting unloaded resonant frequencies from microwave resonant cavities

2003

Equivalent circuits traditionally used to model resonators and coupling networks in the vicinity of a resonance provide values of unloaded resonant frequencies which usually do not agree with experimental results. A new empirical method for the extraction of influence of coupling networks on resonant cavities is presented. The characterization of coupling structures is performed directly from measurements without the need of obtaining the electromagnetic fields inside the cavity, which is very interesting from a practical point of view. Results are validated with simulations and experimental measurements. The accuracy of some cavity applications, such as dielectric characterization techniqu…

Transfer coefficients for evaporation of a system with a Lennard-Jones long-range spline potential

2007

International audience; Surface transfer coefficients are determined by nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations for a Lennard-Jones fluid with a long-range spline potential. In earlier work A. Røsjorde et al., J. Colloid Interface Sci. 240, 355 2001; J. Xu et al., ibid. 299, 452 2006, using a short-range Lennard-Jones spline potential, it was found that the resistivity coefficients to heat and mass transfer agreed rather well with the values predicted by kinetic theory. For the long-range Lennard-Jones spline potential considered in this paper we find significant discrepancies from the values predicted by kinetic theory. In particular the coupling coefficient, and as a consequence the…

Discrete Time Versus Continuous Time Approach to the Autoimmune Response

1989

A discrete time model for the immune regulation recently proposed by Weisbuch and Atlan is extended to continuous coupling coefficients as well as to continuous concentration rates in continuous time. It is shown that depending on the choice of the network parameters typical immune responses can be observed.

Design of Zero-Ripple-Current Coupled Inductors With PWM Signals in Continuous Conduction Mode

2021

Coupled inductors are widely used in multiple outputs and interleaved dc–dc converters. Also filters often use coupled inductors as their inductive part. A generalized design procedure is proposed in this article focused on current ripple minimization and applicable to coupled inductors exposed to pulsewidth modulation signals and in continuous conduction mode. The design provides a very large inductance for all windings but one. Compared to other designs, it adapts to the existing magnetic properties of the magnetic device changing only the inductance ratio, simplifying the design and manufacturing process. It is based on the equivalent inductance value and its divergences. The only assump…
